Today is one of those days that I had to force myself to continue with my online cybersecurity class so I can finish it, get my IT certificate, and hope to find a new day job for myself. The Russians are definitely invading Ukraine and they have even seized the infamous Chernobyl nuclear power plant (the same one that had a major meltdown back in the 1980s).
I saw this incredibly sad photo of Kyiv under bombardment on Twitter with this caption “Kyiv now. Russians will never be forgiven for this. The last time similar scenes were witnessed in the Ukrainian capital was during the attack of Nazi Germany in WWII”.
A new war breaking out in the middle of the Coronavirus pandemic seems like a total nightmare that is impossible to wake up from. But it is real and not some twisted dream. I saw this tweet of a statement from the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial in Poland expressing the true horror of the situation in Ukraine.
The only positive thing I’ve seen so far is that an anti-war movement have risen in Russia. I found this tweet: “Elena Kovalskaya, the director of Moscow’s Vsevolod Meyerhold State Theater and Cultural Center, has announced her resignation in protest against the invasion of Ukraine. ‘It’s impossible to work for a murderer and collect a salary from him,’ she writes.”
There were protests in several cities across Russia and I was heartened by seeing all of these photos and videos being uploaded on Twitter.
The people who are protesting in Russia are doing so at great personal risk because Vladimir Putin is well-known for permanently silencing his critics. They are protesting because they don’t want to go to war with Ukraine and they are willing to risk their lives in an effort to stop this war before it gets any more destructive. This makes them heroes.
I’m bracing myself for some of this to spill over into the United States. As Robert Reich puts it, “Reminder: Putin’s means of keeping Western liberal democracy at bay isn’t just to invade Ukraine. It’s also to stoke division inside the West by fueling racist nationalism in Western Europe and the United States. Trump and Trumpism continue to be Putin’s most important ally.”
It’s so obvious that there are traitors in our midsts, starting with the former president. Here are a few pictures of him in his president days with Vladimir Putin and the body language is incredibly telling.
Donald Trump had expressed his admiration for Putin launching an invasion of Ukraine by saying that it’s “genius” and “savvy.” Anti-Trump Republican George Conway had the perfect retort to that one: “‘This is genius. Bin Laden takes down these buildings with a couple of planes. How smart is that? That’s pretty savvy. Bin Laden liked me. I liked him. Had I been in office, this wouldn’t have happened.’ — What former president Clinton did not say on Sept. 11, 2001”
Sadly there are plenty of pro-Putin traitors who are speaking out, starting with those talking heads on Fox News. (I have to give kudos to the Lincoln Project for adding the Russian national anthem in the background because it just adds to the whole surrealness of seeing actual Americans shill for the opposite side on a level not seen since Tokyo Rose in World War II.
But it doesn’t just stop there. There’s Laura Ingraham and Donald Trump blaming America’s weakness stemming from the so-called “rigged election” in 2020 for somehow encouraging Russia to invade Ukraine.
Steve Bannon and Erik Prince say in this video that they are supporting Russia in this war because the Russians are anti-LGBTQ.
Then there’s this tweet from Dave Troy that says, “Lt. Gen. Michael T. Flynn has published a letter siding with Putin in the conflict that will come to be known as World War III. He is a Fifth Columnist, and behind the trucker operations. He needs to be recalled to service and courtmartialed. Immediately. https://generalflynn.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/2022-GF-Official-Statement-Ukraine-Invasion.pdf“
The idea that we are now in World War III may seem like hyperbole but I saw this tweet from Seth Abramson featuring this alarming information about China and Taiwan: “BREAKING (FNC): ‘Taiwan scrambled its air force as 9 Chinese aircraft entered the nation’s air defense zone, Taiwan’s Defense Ministry announced. 8 J-16s and a Yun-8 breached the air space. The Taiwanese aircrafts broadcast a warning and monitored the Chinese fleet’s activities.'”
If there is a concurrent Asian front then we are definitely in World War III, which totally sucks, especially since we are still in the major of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has left 941,000 Americans dead as of this writing.
