Here is the thirty-fourth video in a series of computer animations called The Unicorn With An Attitude that I started back in the 1990’s in an ill-fated attempt to show off my abilities as an artist and a computer whiz in the hopes of either 1) get famous or 2) get a higher paying job than the office administrative work that I was frequently offered.

I created this animation way back in 2000. By that time I got my own website called Twisted Unicorn and I basically focused on uploading my animations there on that site and less on BBS and CompuServe.

“Who Wants to be Rich and Famous by Degrading Yourself?” is a parody of the reality shows of that era. As the original writeup for this animation stated:

It’s an unauthorized parody of so-called reality television shows like Who Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire, Survivor, Big Brother, and The 1900 House.

At the time I created this both Survivor and Big Brother were in their first season. PBS had aired a series of “educational” reality shows like The 1900 House where modern people lived in a house that was outfitted by the standards of the year 1900. Fox even aired the first, and only, reality game show special called Who Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire? where women competed for the grand prize of marrying a total stranger on national television. The Wikipedia explains in full detail why that particular show became such a disaster for Fox that it was quickly cancelled.

Since I created this animation, the reality shows have proliferated more and more. Look at any TV schedule and you’ll see that at least half of the shows scheduled are reality shows. That’s because, compared to scripted shows, reality shows are relatively cheap to make and, if it becomes a ratings hit, the payout is huge.

But there have been more scandals from these reality shows as well. I uploaded this animation on YouTube the day after it was revealed that the oldest son on TLC’s hit reality show 19 Kids and Counting had sexually molested some of his sisters when he was 15. This scandal came just a few months after TLC had cancelled another reality show, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, when it was revealed that Honey Boo Boo’s mother, Mama June, had ditched Honey Boo Boo’s father in favor of an old boyfriend who was accused of sexually abusing one of Mama June’s older daughters and had just finished serving time in prison for sexually abusing another young girl.

Right now those two shows are the most controversial reality shows until the next reality TV scandal breaks.

So, without further ado, here is “Who Wants to be Rich and Famous by Degrading Yourself?”
